Portland’s Hot Glass Studio Invitational
Twelve Top Artists Together for the First Time

Opening Reception: FIRST Thursday, November 5, 6-9PM, 2009

PORTLAND – Since its opening eight years ago, Elements Glass Gallery + Studio has been a catalyst in Portland’s hot glass movement.

On November 5, the North Pearl studio’s creative thrust reaches new heights when it hosts the Portland Hot Glass Studio Artist Invitational, unveiling the collective work of twelve top talents in an exhilarating look at the state of the glass blowing art in the metro area.

The works on view showcase–for the first time in one gallery–the designs and techniques of Portland’s most accomplished hot glass artists. They range from the near psychedelic effects of Justin Parker’s use of color and optics to Opie Hileman’s thoughtful fusions of rural and urban sensibilities.

The collective includes Ana Obermayr, Andi Kovel, Andy Paiko, Bryan Jablonski, Cheyenne Malcolm, Ken Peterson, Lynn Everett Read, Matt Clark, and Elements Glass owner/founders Ian Gilula and Aaron Frankel. In creating Elements Glass, Gilula and Frankel envisioned a space that would foster the growth of an artistic community.

They succeeded, forming an energizing hub for accomplished glass artists (the studio hosted the 2005 World Glass Conference), a thriving center for beginning and advanced students, and a fully equipped facility for artists who needed a larger space than their own to produce larger pieces.

True to this collective spirit, the month-long Studio Artist Invitational will give visitors the opportunity to see new work, discover glass-blowing techniques, meet the artists, attend demonstrations, and experience the range of the Portland hot glass movement while becoming participants in its growth.

Each artist will take part in the First Thursday opening, with talks, live demonstrations, and refreshments. Symbolic of the force that has powered the Portland hot glass scene, the opening night will include one more collective effort: the group’s attempt to blow a world-record glass sphere.

The show was amazing the channel 8 came out and hundreds of people showed up.
